Appearance: Dr Beckett usually has a quietly ruffled appearance. His open face, displays all his emotions for everyone to see and his bright blue eyes reveal his keen interest in the many people and places around him. One gets the impression that he is calmly taking everything on board. When he smiles, Beckett's cheeks are highlighted by the dimples there. His short hair is gelled into place and he has a moustache and a five o'clock shadow. He will usually be seen wearing his Atlantis uniform.
Personality: The team's chief medical doctor, Beckett is a Scottish man with a witty sense of humor. If anything Dr Beckett cares too much. He is a very emotional man and he wears his emotions openly for all to see. This is one of the reasons he is such an exceptional doctor. This trait can also lead to the occasional emotional outburst and can also cause him to babble under pressure.
Bio: Carson Beckett was born and raised in Scotland, the youngest child of four siblings. His childhood was a loving and happy one. He was always emotional from a very young age and showed an emotional maturity beyond that of most children. His love for his mother in particular is immense and he still misses her terribly and worries about her since being trapped in Atlantis.
Always a high achiever in school, he showed a keen interest in both people and science and his kind nature and sense of humour made him popular with his peers. He eventually attended The University of Edinburgh, where he studied medicine and completed a PhD in molecular medicine.
Over the following years, he became well-respected in both the medical and scientific communities. When a place became available on a multinational research unit studying the Ancient outpost found in Antarctica, Beckett was an obvious choice for the position. Here Beckett was found to be one of the rare individuals possessing the gene which allows humans to interact with Ancient technology. Dr Beckett dubbed this gene the Ancient Technology Activation (ATA) gene and was the driving force behind isolating this gene and developing a test for its presence. He then expanded his research into developing a gene therapy treatment which could give the ATA gene to many humans who previously lacked one. He was unable to test this therapy however, while on Earth, due to the strict regulations surrounding such treatments.
When the location of Atlantis was discovered, Doctor Beckett joined the Atlantis expedition under Doctor Elizabeth Weir, as the chief medical officer. Since his arrival in Atlantis, Beckett has adapted well to the situation the team find themselves in. He has, due to necessity, become an expert in xenobiology and learnt to use Ancient technology, though often with interesting consequences.
