will chickering; Name: Dr. William Lysander Chickering
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Age: 45
Place of Birth: Liverpool, England [American citizen]
Rank: Civilian (C1)
Branch: Civilian
Position: Physician, Base Staff
Appearance: Imposingly tall and slightly lanky, his unkempt curly hair and five o'clock shadow of scruff give him a slightly disshevelled appearance. His somewhat unkindly dubbed "crazy eyes" are a sharp, clear blue. Will's not fond of the uniform, wearing it generally as he's required to but preferring to don more comfortable civvies under his ever-present lab coat.
Personality: Will is well-known for his complete and utter lack of bedside manner. Acerbic and deeply cynical, Will has little regard for authority and is unafraid to speak his mind. Simply put, he's a snarky bastard. Will and people don't go well together; he's widely disliked in Atlantis, though he's come to be held with a grudging respect by those who recognise his ability in the medical field. Will does not get mocked about his name as often as one would expect, as most people have by now figured out that it's not necessarily so good an idea to get on the bad side of somebody who has so much influence over your health... and sharp, pointy objects. As a result, Will is totally comfortable in rattling off annoying nicknames for those around him; in fact, don't be surprised if you get landed with a few. Will has never really bothered with learning names, it just slows him down.
Bio: Born in England, the younger of two children, William Chickering - Will, as he prefers to be known - spent his early years growing up in Liverpool. His mother was American, father a full-blooded Brit. The first time the two met, she ended up punching him in the face and, in retrospect, Will muses that it was more or less downhill from there. For almost as long as he can remember, his parents were at war with one another, and their favourite weapons were Will and his older brother, Petruchio. (Known as Pete. Will is all too grateful that his mother was moving out of her Shakespeare phase by the time he came along.)
He was thirteen when his family moved to the States due to his father's work, fourteen when his parents finally split, seventeen when his mother remarried for the first time. She's married again three times since, but Will stopped meeting them after the third husband. He's not on good terms with his mother, and the two hadn't had much in the way of contact for about a year before Will left for Atlantis, though he did leave a message on her machine when he found out the mission was a go. His father died of a stroke seven years ago.
When it comes to personal relationships, Will was married near the beginning of his residency and divorced before its end. He doesn't impart much else about this time in his life. Considered something of a loner; Will prefers "self-sufficient".
A graduate of Havard Medical School and an expert in rare and exotic diseases, Will could easily have gone far in the medical field if only he'd had the reserve, the patience or the inclination. But Will, not one to suffer fools, has never been that guy. His brilliant mind still carried some reputation, though, and in this way (as well as the pure luck of having some ex-associates in the right places) he came to the attention of Stargate Command. The SGC consulted with Will on a number of occasions over several years and Will, who thought he'd seen everything, found himself being surprised and challenged all over again by the strange and perplexing conditions arising from Stargate travel.
When the Atlantis mission was given a green light, Weir remembered his previous contributions during her own brief tenure at the SGC, and invited Will to take part in the expedition.
