Appearance: Tall (183cm) and lanky, although not skinny, Dr Kavanagh looks down on most of his fellow scientists and that’s the way he likes it. He has long straight brown hair that is always greasy-looking and generally kept tied in a pony tail at the base of his neck. His horn-rimmed glasses only add to his generally dorky clothing sense. Basically he manages to look dismissive and arrogant at all times, which matches well with his whiny voice and general overall pessimistic attitude to life.
Personality: Kavanagh is self-centered, mean, pessimistic, bureaucratic, and holds long grudges. He is also highly intelligent and capable of coming up with ingenious solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems. He basically isn’t a bad person, but his self-centered nature means that he will always put himself first and everyone else after that. This trait overall makes him incredibly unlikable and incessantly whiny.
Bio: American born and raised, Kavanagh was a child prodigy. He excelled in math, physics and astronomy and was accepted into The California Institute of Technology (CalTech) on a full scholarship. Here his many interests led him to do part-time research into high-energy nuclear physics, gravity-wave detection and the structure of the universe. After graduating, he threw himself into a PhD looking into a new kind of jet propulsion system for NASA. This research led to him being noticed by the SGC, which he joined only after being enticed by the promise of many new technologically advanced toys to play with. At the SGC however, he developed an immediate dislike of the military and complete disdain for military leadership. He joined the Atlantis expedition because he thought things would be to more of his liking with a civilian leader instead of a military one. Unfortunately, after arriving in Atlantis, he realized the error of this assumption, especially after an incident in which Weir told him to "Worry a little bit more about their lives, and less about your own ass" and then threatened to exile him to a barren world alone if he didn't return to work. He is of the belief that Weir deliberately humiliated him in front of his team, thus a long-lived grudge was born and ever since he takes pleasure in undermining Weir's leadership whenever possible.
