Appearance: A bit shorter than the average and a lot skinnier, Redds always seems to be a bit scruffy. This is somewhat due to his insomnia, which he has problems with--however, one odd thing is that he sleeps like a log when offworld. A summary of his appearance would be that you probably wouldn't be able to pick him out in a crowd.
Personality: Joseph Redds is neither an optimist nor a pessimist. His general view is that things will happen, whether for better or for worse, and no amount of complaining will change that. Another facet of Joe's personality is that he tends to first try solving a problem with force, a habit which doesn't always attain good results.
In the field as well as anywhere else, the man is slightly obsessive-compulsive about having everything in working order and perfectly organized. This is somewhat a side effect of having worked in the demolitions field for almost five years, and shows up in almost everything he does. Joseph can also become quite annoyed at sloppiness, whether it be a messy room, or a rifle that doesn't work quite right. It also starts to play with his sanity if he spots a picture frame that's just barely tilted.
Bio: Joe grew up in suburban West Virginia, where he spent his childhood exploring the backcountry with a few friends. Homeschooling limited his social network, but he knew a few local boys and often went out hiking. This was one of the ways he'd get away from the stress of having two older sisters picking on and teasing him all the time.
At the tender age of 13, he discovered the wonders of explosives after his father, a coal miner, told him all about his job blasting out new tunnels in mines. The young Joseph spent the next few years learning about explosives and the art of making them work. Of course, he didn't get the opportunity to make any.
In his mid-teens, he made up his mind that he would join the US Army. This was thought of as a bad idea by the rest of his family, but Redds went to the area recruiting station all the same and enlisted. Nine months and countless pushups later he graduated from Fort Benning, Georgia in the top 80% of his class, and due to bizarre juggling by the REMFs was assigned to Stargate Command in Cheyenne mountain. There he served as general base infantry until the Atlantis expedition was formed, at which point he managed to secure a position somewhere in the military personnel who were to make the one-way trip to Atlantis.
After that point, the soldier known as Joseph Redds faded into the background. He never saved the day, he never destroyed a Wraith hive ship, but instead he just did his job.
