The planet of Dolce far Niente (which translated to Earth terms is Italian for delightful idleness) is a small planet often overlooked due to the four large moons that orbit it. Helping the moons hide the planet is a thin asteroid belt that orbits around the moons. The planet itself is much affected by this protection, for the presence of the moons greatly affects its oceans, which cover about 85% of the planet's surface area. As a result what little land there is low lying and often flooded. This constant threat of water led to the development of a water adept people, who learned to deal with the flooding by developing a canal system combined with the creation of a series of dams and floodgates to control the path of the water. Places with flood protection became highly valued and the places where it was installed developed into cities as people flocked to them for their safety.
Dolce far Niente's technology is not limited to waterways, but is fairly well rounded. Electricity is used, generated by the various dams on the planet for various activities including providing light. Satellites orbit the planet's four moons and are used to send alert of approaching ships (be they from the Stargate, which is in space and also orbits the planet with its moons, or space itself), which is just one of the defenses against the Wraith. Weapon wise they are fairly unique in the sense that the large majority of the weapons are electrically based. However explosives do exist, but are more often used on space expeditions to the planet's moons, which are mined for their precious metals that are not found on Dolce far Niente.
By contrast, the culture of Dolce far Niente is, in human eyes, far less developed. The sole country on the planet runs on a feudal system with the power being spilt between the five major cities' rulers. These rulers gain their power financially by renting out the land outside the cities to poorer citizens to grow food, with an agreement that in return they get 15% of the farmers’ crops. However, due to lack of flood protection on the farming land only about 20% of the crops survive anyways so the farmers never make enough to support themselves without the city ruler's help. Those who wind up living outside the city are generally doomed to a life of hardship and poverty. Life inside the cities is a different story entirely, for their culture flourishes- often helped along by the rulers who deter such cultural advancements outside the city walls. Rulers seeking new forms of entertainment support the arts and as a result the cities are full of highly competitive artists, writers, architects, chefs, sculptors.
Since it is not a very well known planet, Dolce far Niente has a lot of mystery surrounding it. Rumors of a secret system to stop the Wraiths is thought to be possessed by it's inhabitants, and there also stories of visitors to Dolce far Niente disappearing, presumably lost in the planet's unpredictable waters.
